My First Week
What a week~
Starting off the weekend, Donny and I arrived to find the home with no electricity! How embarrasing, we had the Risley's drive 5 hours to visit with a car load of furniture.. to find the little home in candle light. Well I guess you could say it was a romantic weekend.
Monday of the long weekend (Opening weekend for the 2005 Season): Still no sign of snow. We had lunch on the mountain in the sunlight.. little did I realise it was the last time I would see sun for quite some time. As I drove down the mountain, I faced the beginning of a very snowy week! Thank goodness, the storm to begin winter was on its way. My first night alone, Thunder, lightning, gusty winds, you name it. My fisrt trip up the mountain the next morning... Chains required! Nothing like being chucked straight into the deep end.
As the snow depth got greater, the longer my treck up the hill took. What was first off a 30 min trip, became 40 mins, 50 mins, and one morning with snow almost in Omeo 1 hour and 30 mins.. its only been 7 days and I am already sick of puting on chains!
The hiring clinic: Although I was making many new friends, I was beginning to think the week was one great big waste of time and money, feeling that I was at the bottom of the list for hiring staff. The clinic went for three days and was a basic introduction to Instructing. Out of about 120 people, 35 were to be selected after the exam on Thursday to work for the mountain.. after receiving bad vibes all day, as soon as the exam was finished (2:00 pm) I made my way to the pub with another friend who was feeling down in all the same places. Presentation's were at 4:00 pm so after 2 hours of beer I was no longer so worried - turned out not so bad afterall! I got best instructor out of the 60 odd snowboarders.. and have received a full time job (starting today - Monday).. as for my drinking partner, he also got the job he was after. What a great week! Have scored a seasons pass worth $1,300, a cool uniform, and I get staff discounts all over the mountain. Immediate family get 25% off lift tickets, so everyone's happy!
Tommorrow I get my groovy uniform, and start teaching Wednesday, after yet another days training tommorrow.
Have had Donny and a few mates up this weekend, so the house feels a lot more lived in, and the company was also great. It is looking to be quite a busy and social season ahead. More snow mid week predicted.
Bring it on!!
